The
Five A's Quick Reference
For a 15-minute counseling session
Determine client's current smoking status
1. Ask: identify each
client's smoking status at each visit |
Review smoking associated risks (for fetus, infant, and mother)
2. Advise: strongly urge tobacco users to quit |
Review how to maintain current non-smoking behaviors
3. Assess: determine
client's willingness to quit |
Provide self-help manuals and pamphlets
4. Assist: aid the client in
her cessation attempt |
Note smoking status in chart
Review status throughout pregnancy and support any positive changes the patient has made
5. Arrange: schedule follow-up contact |
Be careful not to measure success of the program by how many women quit smoking, rather by how effectively your office has implemented the Five A's smoking cessation method.
