#4 - Assist

Aid the client in her cessation attempt. Help her set a cessation date within the next four weeks, acknowledging that no time is ideal to quit. Provide clients with self-help materials. If the client is not willing to quit at this time, provide her with motivating literature. Your office may also want to ask clients to sign a cessation date contract.

Implementation

 Help the client develop a plan to quit

  • Set a cessation date
  • Remove tobacco products

 Provide practical counseling

  • Abstinence is desired end result of counseling
  • Past quit experiences
  • Triggers
  • Social situations

 Provide internal treatment social support

  • Supportive clinical environment
  • "My office staff and I are able to assist you."

 Help client obtain external treatment social support

  • Ask spouse/partner, friends, and co-workers to support her in her quit attempt

 Provide supplementary materials

  • Sources - federal agencies, non-for-profits, local and state health departments
  • Type - culturally/racially/educationally/ age appropriate for client
  • Location - readily available
