#2 - Advise

Strongly urge all tobacco users to quit.  Provide a brief cessation message at every encounter. This message should be clear and supportive, non-confrontational, and specific to the smoker's readiness to quit (NZ Guideline-completed).

Implementation: In a clear, strong, and personalized manner, urge every tobacco user to quit.

This is an example of each type of message.

  • Clear Message: "I think it is important for you to quit smoking now and I can help you."

  • Strong message: "As your clinician, I need to advise you that quitting smoking is the most important thing you can do for your health and your baby's health."

  • Personalized message: Reinforce your message by clearly explaining the facts and including messages relating to pregnancy and smoking.

Educational interventions are most commonly employed during this step. It is important in this step to inform your client of the health effects of smoking and to help her find a way to assess the barriers that keep her from quitting.
