Background
- In 1998, nearly 14 million women of reproductive age were
smokers, and smoking prevalence in this group was higher (25.3) than the overall population of women 18 years of age and older (22.0).
- Prevalence is inversely related to a
woman's level of education.
- Smoking prevalence today (2000) is nearly three times higher among women who have only 9-11 years of education (32.9) than among women with 16+ years of education (11.2).
- Smoking prevalence is higher among women living below the poverty level (29.6) than among those living at or above the poverty level (21.6).
