2. Background

  • An estimated 18.1% of adult U.S. women aged 18 years or older (slightly less than 1 of 5) are current cigarette smokers.4 Cigarette smoking estimates for women by age are as follows: 18–24 years (20.7%), 25–44 years (21.4%), 45–64 years (18.8%), and 65 years or older (8.3%). 21

Smoking Prevalence Among Women According to Level of Education: % of Female Population Who Smoke, 2000

  • Prevalence is inversely related to a woman's level of education.

  • Smoking prevalence today (2000) is nearly three times higher among women who have only 9-11 years of education (32.9) than among women with 16+ years of education (11.2).

  • Smoking prevalence is higher among women living below the poverty level (29.6) than among those living at or above the poverty level (21.6).
