9. Conclusion

HIV infection is currently a significant health concern for adolescents and adult women, particularly minorities. Family planning providers can play a major role in helping women know their status and learn how to prevent infections.

The role for primary care health care providers includes;

  • assessing risk,
  • testing or referral for testing, and
  • risk reduction counseling.

All female clients should have a risk assessment and receive risk reduction counseling at their initial health care visit and annually.

For clients who have a history of risk, such as unprotected sex with a partner of unknown status, HIV testing should be offered and recommended.

The information provided in this continuing education offering does not include the more detailed information on counseling skills necessary for HIV pre and post-test counseling. Health care providers who counsel clients prior to, and after HIV testing, can obtain training and/or additional information through some of the resources listed in the next section (references).
