    2. Normal Liver Function (4)(5)

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body and plays a vital role in regulating the body. We have included some basic functions of the liver as a review. As you review this list, consider how a person with a compromised liver may exhibit symptoms.

The liver does each of the following:

    • Detoxifies everything an individual eats, breathes, and absorbs through their skin

    • Converts nutrients from consumed food into energy, hormones, blood clotting factors and immune factors

    • Stores vitamins, sugars, fats and other nutrients from the food an individual eats

    • Regulates fat stores and controls the production and excretion of cholesterol

    • Produces bile, which helps digest food and absorbs important nutrients

    • Breaks down harmful substances like alcohol and other toxic chemicals

    • Removes waste products from the blood
