    4. Case Studies

    Case 1

A 24-year-old female presents to your clinic. She states that her boyfriend “forced” her to have sex.

Questions: What type of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) tests are recommended in this case? Why?

    Case 2

One of the nurses in your clinic is concerned because she dropped the swab on the floor after the CT specimen was collected.

Questions: Should the specimen be used for testing? Why or why not?

    Case 3

You receive a phone call from the laboratory telling you that the swab used for the specimen was not from the appropriate collection kit.

Questions: Will this affect the test result? Why or why not?

    Case 4

A 26-year-old female presents to your clinic because she was recently treated for CT and wishes to make sure that she is cured.

Questions: Which CT tests are appropriate to use in this situation? Are there any special considerations with performing “test of cure” for CT?

    Case 5

You get a phone call from the laboratory informing you that they received a specimen with no name or number on the collection tube.

Questions: Can this specimen be tested? Why or why not?

    Case 6

A doctor staffs your clinic only once or twice a month. You are concerned that he is not adhering to proper collection techniques after viewing visible pus on the swab.

Question: What effect could this have on the results?

    Case 7

A CT swab collected late Friday was put in the freezer to be mailed out Monday morning.

Questions: Can this specimen be tested?

    Case 8

A 19-year-old female presents with lower abdominal pain and fever. She is currently menstruating.

Questions: Can this patient be tested at this time? Will blood affect the accuracy of the CT test?

    Case 9

15 year old male collects a urine sample. The urine in the cup appears very clear and dilute

Questions: Will this have an affect on the accuracy of results?
