    4. Components & Integration of a Science-Based Approach

A science-based approach requires the use of one or more of the following [13]:
    Research
Using sound social science research to identify a target population and the factors that put that population at risk.
    > > GO to Research >>

    Theory
Using health education and behavior theories to help to identify risk factors and the intervention activities to address those factors.
    > > GO to Theory >>

    Logic Models
Using a logic model to develop or adapt a program.
    > > GO to Logic Models >>

    Selecting, Adapting and Implementing
Replicating or adapting a science-based program.
    > > GO to Selecting, Adapting and Implementing >>

    Evaluation
Conducting process and outcome [and impact] evaluations. > > GO to Evaluation >>

This approach can be incorporated into the work of any state or local organization, council, coalition, or alliance aimed at improving health outcomes [15].

Integrating one or more science-based approaches into a program may seem overwhelming. It may seem like there is not enough staff time, money, or resources to integrate these approaches. By reading through this module, practitioners may begin to realize that they are already doing some of these key steps in their every day program activities. Using research, theory, logical rationale for activities, best practices, and evaluation are all integral components to quality public health interventions. Many practitioners do not even realize that they do at least one of these strategies in their current programs. Here each component of a science-based approach to adolescent sexual health interventions will be described in detail.
