Objectives
This training will focus on microscopy as it is applied
in the family planning setting. Specific topics
to be covered include “wet prep” preparations,
gleaning information from urine microscopy, determining
when referral or further testing is necessary,
as well as what to do when clinic microscopy and
additional testing conflict.
At the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Have increased familiarity with the microscope and
its proper adjustment for optimal results;
- Be able to identify entities on a wet prep;
- Be able to list the components of urine microscopy;
- Be able to describe the limitations of microscopy.
Audience
This training is designed for all family planning
staff involved in laboratory activities; NPs,
nurses, cytologist, and lab techs.
Presenter
Beverly J. Resch, MT (ASCP), SCT (ASCP), has
been the Cytology Supervisor at the Wisconsin
State Laboratory of Hygiene since 2001. Prior
to that, she was Supervisor of Cytology in
Janesville, WI at Mercy Health Systems for four
years. She received her certification in Medical
Technology in 1962 after attending the University
of Illinois where she also worked as a Medical
Technologist, rotating through all departments
as a generalist. In 1990, she received a
BA Degree from Western Illinois University.
From 1991 to 1996 she worked as a bench tech
in Cytology at the Illinois State Laboratory of
Hygiene. Beverly has also had the adventure
of living for three years in Bolivia, SA where she
worked to set up a clinical laboratory.
