Overview

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most frequently reported infectious disease and a major cause of PID and infertility in the United States. It is estimated that 2.8 million new infections occur annually with many going undiagnosed due to the asymptomatic nature of the infection. Young women are disproportionately affected with females aged 15-24 having the highest rates of infection. According to the Office of Population Affairs' Family Planning Annual Report, in 2005 58% of clients seeking care were either in their teens or early 20's. As such, family planning clinics represent a prime venue for reaching this high risk population. Current research has demonstrated that routine screening of women under 26 years of age has reduced chlamydia prevalence and associated sequelae. In times where new resources are scarce, it is important to focus efforts on those individuals at greatest risk and treat partners to stem the tide of infection.

Objectives

  1. Describe current trends in chlamydia prevalence.
  2. Apply CDC STD treatment guidelines and screening recommendations to guide testing of individuals at high risk of chlamydia infection.
  3. Discuss key elements of effective partner management for patients at high risk of chlamydia infection.
