Purpose
Smoking cessation and weight management are cross-cutting issues in public health. From family planning
providers to health educators, the need to understand and be able to communicate effectively to promote
positive behavior change is evident. We invite you to participate in our autumn series and learn more about
smoking cessation and weight management and how they relate to your client’s well-being.
Audience
This information is appropriate for nurses, nurse practitioners, public health educators, school-based
educators, social service providers and other interested family planning and public health staff.

Sept. 28 (Thur.) - 11:30 —1pm CST (Registration deadline is Sept. 21)
Objectives - At the end of this program participants will be able to:
- Describe the basics of tobacco treatment counseling
- Identify basics of FDA approved effective medications used to treat tobacco dependence
- Distinguish between effective and ineffective approaches to convey information about tobacco
dependence and treatment
Speaker:
- Laurie Groskopf, BA,
- is the regional outreach specialist for northern Wisconsin at the
UW Center for
Tobacco Research & Intervention. Groskopf provides training and technical assistance to medical facilities,
coalitions, therapists, and others with an emphasis on implementing US Public Health Service Clinic Practice
Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. She has worked to make smoking cessation available to
the uninsured. She has been doing tobacco outreach with UW Madison School of Medicine since 2001.
Weight Management with Family Planning Clients: Lighten Up
October 19 (Thur.) - 11:30 —1pm CST (Registration deadline is Oct.
12)
Objectives - At the end of this program participants will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of obesity among women of childbearing age
- Clarify the relationship between obesity, thromoembolic events, and hormonal contraception
- Describe the effect of obesity on the efficacy of hormonal contraception
- Discuss the role of weight assessment in contraceptive counseling
Speaker:
- Dr. Anjel Vahratian, PhD, MPH,
- has a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Reproductive and Women’s
Health and a PhD in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology. She is a research investigator in the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan. She is a member of several
professional societies and has consistently earned grants, honors, and awards for her academic and scientific
contributions. Her knowledge and current research on the implications of maternal obesity on reproductive
health make her a terrific resource for our audio broadcast (U
of M bio).
To Participate
- Register by fax, mail, or on-line with HCET prior to the audio conference date.
- Choose a location that is quiet and convenient
for you to call in.
- Watch for the handouts and toll free dial-in number to be e-mailed 2-3 days prior to the broadcast.
- Distribute or copy handouts to all who plan to listen.*
* We encourage the use of speaker phones so you can have multiple listeners.
Registration fee is based solely on the number of telephone lines used by an individual or agency.
Fee
- $20 per session for WI residents
- $25 per session for non-WI residents
- $30 both sessions for WI residents
- $40 both sessions for non-WI residents
- $10 Nursing Contact Hour fee for each contact hour request.
- $10 Certified Health Education contact hour fee
* A $10 administration fee is charged for all cancellations.
