Overview
Today’s teen culture is much more fluid in terms of
sexual orientation/experimentation/experience than previous generations (“I
Kissed a Girl” hit the top of the pop charts last month). African American
and Latino women are contracting HIV faster than any other group – through
heterosexual sex. Homosexuality is not socially acceptable in many minority
communities, and many men lead double lives. A woman who identifies herself
as lesbian is twice as likely to have an unplanned pregnancy as a straight
woman.
Are our family planning clinics providing quality care
to all members of our community who need our services? Are we respectful?
Judgemental? Do we fail to provide needed services because of how we ask a
question or fail to ask a question? Do our assumptions or lack of knowledge
impede our provision of quality health care? Join Dr. Dorothy
Simpson-Taylor, a diversity consultant, social justice mediator,
storyteller, and psychotherapist as she provides us with an eye-opening and
instructive cultural competency “check-up”.
*NOTE - Heterosexism is discrimination or prejudice
against homosexuals by heterosexuals.
Topics
- Develop a dialogue about the role that language has in unpacking
racism and heterosexism in the family planning setting.
- Explore the dynamics of racism and sexism in professional health
care.
- Reflect on personal journeys with privilege and oppression.
- Discuss strategies to confront and dismantle health care
homophobic and racist interactions.
