Overview
This audio conference, designed for health educators, family planning clinic staff, and youth-serving professionals, nurses and nurse practitioners, reviews the latest social science research on adolescent contraceptive use, addresses best practices for youth-friendly reproductive health services, explores ways to expand contraceptive and condom access for underserved teens, and provides information on replicable, evaluated programs.
Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the latest trends in adolescent contraceptive use.
- Discuss protective and risk factors related to adolescent contraceptive use.
- Identify ten best practices that health clinics can implement to ensure the “youth-friendliness” of reproductive and sexual health services.
- Identify five evaluated programs designed to improve knowledge and increase access to contraception among young people.
- Describe an innovative research strategy to improve youth-friendly reproductive and sexual health services in your community.
Facilitator
- Laura Davis
- is Director of Adolescent Sexual Health Services at
Advocates for Youth. She has both international and domestic experience, including more than twenty years of program planning, teaching, training, and organizational development in the field of reproductive health. She is the former manager of a mall-based family planning clinic for teens and has worked as a consultant with International Planned Parenthood Federation and the United States Agency for International Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. She is the co-author (with Dr. Claire Brindis) of Communities Responding to the Challenge of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (Advocates for Youth, 1998) and Protection as Prevention: Contraception for Sexually Active Teens (National Campaign, 2000). Ms. Davis received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Women's Studies from the College of Wooster in Ohio and a Master's Degree in Women's Studies from Ohio State University.

Participants can earn nursing contact hours and CHES contact hours for a $10 processing fee.
HCET is an approved provider of nursing continuing education by the Indiana State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
Health Care Education and Training, Inc. is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
