Purpose
The Minnesota Reproductive Health Update provides the latest information in reproductive health practice, research, and technology for family planning staff across the state of Minnesota. Specialists in the field address a range of topics, which include but are not limited to Contraceptive Technologies, Marketing to Male Clients, Cultural Competence, STIs in Minnesota, and Adolescent Health.
Objectives
Opening Keynote:
IUDs and Implants: Update on Long-Acting Contraception and Why It’s
Important – Dr. Amy Gilbert
- Describe clinical essentials of both IUDs and of the subdermal implants.
- Discuss implications of unintended pregnancy in the United States.
- Recall the role of long-acting contraception in decreasing unintended pregnancy.
Concurrent Session 1
- Cultural Competence and Reproductive Health; African American Perspectives – Dorii Gbolo
- Identify health disparities that exist related to Infant mortality, cancer screening , STDs & HIV (Nationwide and in the state of MN)
- Describe four reproductive health concerns of African American Women
- Describe four strategies that may be utilized to help African American women with reproductive issues

- Adolescent Reproductive Health Update – Dr. Alison Warford
Afternoon Session: Marketing to the Male Client – Charles Marquardt
- Discuss the need for providing male services in a family planning clinic setting.
- Describe the spectrum of clinic services that could attract males to family planning programs.
- Describe five practical ways of marketing to male clients for family planning services.
Concurrent Session 2
- Working with Transgendered Clients 101 – Dr. Eric Meininger
- Describe the differences between gender, sexual orientation, and sex.
- Identify the unique reproductive health needs of transgendered clients related to access to care, language, medical knowledge, and referrals.
- Discuss the rights of transgendered clients specific to Minnesota state policy.
- The Health Realization Model – Cindi Claypatch
- Discuss the Health Realization/Resilience Model as a best practice.
- Discuss the components of innate health and what gets in the way of experiencing it personally or with your clients.
- Describe ways to stay grounded and have great impact and rapport while working with difficult populations or clients.
- STI Update – Summer Martins
- Describe the epidemiology of Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in Minnesota.
- Identify patients who meet national STD screening criteria.
- Examine STD treatment strategies including recent developments.
- Interpret trends in sexual behavior among Minnesota teens.
Closing Session: Political Update – Lorie Alveshere and Avi Viswanathan
Presenters
- Amy Gilbert, MD
- is the Medical Director at Family Tree Clinic in St. Paul, MN. She has lectured on reproductive health care throughout the Twin Cities and was recognized as “Changemaker 2002” by MN Women’s Press for her work on increasing access to emergency contraception in MN.
- Charles Marquardt, BA
- has 15 years of experience in the field of reproductive health care and human sexuality. Mr. Marquardt’s expertise ranges from comprehensive reproductive health care and sexuality education for health care professionals to adolescent and adult learning techniques as well as adult to adolescent communication.

- Dorii Gbolo, BSN, RN, PHN
- conducted a comprehensive literature review of urban women’s experiences within the health care system. She provides technical assistance to expand women’s health across the life cycle within a clinical system. She works to reduce gaps in community health care with the purpose of increasing local program capacity for low-income women of color.

- Eric Meininger, MD, MPH
- specializes in adolescent health. He has extensive experience working with GLBT youth and homeless/runaway youth as well as the stressors that teens and young adults and their families face.

- Cindi Claypatch, MA
- is the founder and director of the Health Realization Training Center, formerly known as the Glenwood-Lyndale Health Realization Training Center. She is a full-time trainer and consultant. Ms. Claypatch received training in Health Realization when it first came to the country in 1981. She has 28 years of experience creating programs, consulting, training, counseling and healing. Her early years were devoted to the promotion of health in individuals and families dealing with mental health and/or chemical health issues. Later she worked in low-income communities where she created the training center and co-created a clinic to provide access to a resilience model to people in need. It has been her mission to assist people in raising their level of wellness in a variety of organizational settings.

- Summer Martins, MPH, BA
- received her BA in Anthropology from the University of the South and her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota. Currently, Ms. Martins is the STD Surveillance Coordinator for the STD and HIV section of the Minnesota Department of Health. Her work as an epidemiologist has focused mainly on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. She has also worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.

- Lorie Alveshere, RN, BA
- is the Policy Coordinator for the Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention and Parenting in St. Paul. She serves as a registered lobbyist for a statewide adolescent health organization and provides leadership and direction to Sexuality Education for Life – Minnesota Coalition. Ms. Alveshere provides education, training and advocacy to decision-makers and constituents about adolescent sexual health issues.

- is the Political Director for NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota Foundation.
