Overview

Are you baffled and frustrated by how to “reach” clients who continue to engage in high risk behaviors? Perhaps it’s time to learn a new tactic. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, directive approach that aims to elicit behavior change in a client by exploring and resolving ambivalence, then building on the teen/woman’s own intrinsic motivation. In Motivational Interviewing the practitioner joins with the client to help her examine her internal conflicts about values, goals, beliefs and behaviors. The practitioner then supports the client to take responsibility to change her behavior, and to decide if and when this will occur. Motivational Interviewing is especially effective with individuals who are not interested in change or are contemplating but not yet ready to make a change. Our presenter, Dr. Melanie Gold, uses Motivational Interviewing techniques with her adolescent patients to impact STD rates and unintended pregnancies.

Topics

  • Review of research data that shows effectiveness of MI in the Family Planning arena
  • Stages of Readiness to Change
  • Assessing a patient’s readiness to change a health behavior
  • Matching counseling to readiness to change
  • Strategies for motivating behavior change in the reproductive health setting
  • Identifying the most effective ways to convey information and advice
