EC Advocates: Talking Points
Almost half (49.2%) of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, and roughly half of those end in abortion. Timely access to EC could lower the number of abortions.
Experts conservatively estimate that 700,000 abortions could be avoided with timely access to EC.
Nationally, over 300,000 women are raped each year in the US, resulting in over 25,000 unintended pregnancies and 16,000 abortions. These pregnancies could be prevented if women who were raped had access to EC.
Unintended pregnancy is highest among younger women and lower income women. Overcoming barriers to accessing EC is crucial to preventing unintended pregnancy.
Children resulting from unplanned pregnancies are less likely to receive adequate pre and post-natal care, and have increased risk of low birth weight, infant mortality, being abused and neglected, poor child development and health, and low
academic achievement.
Emergency contraceptive pills do not cause abortion.
