HCET Home > Resources > EC Home > Info for Consumers > Information for Consumers Overview Information for Consumers Overview The most common form of EC is an oral contraceptive pill. Emergency Contraception can prevent unintended pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, method failure, incorrect method use or sexual assault. If taken correctly, EC can reduce the chance of unintended pregnancy by 89% and is most effective if used within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraceptive pills do not affect a fertilized egg that has been implanted in the uterus. EC does not interfere with an already established pregnancy because EC is not effective once the process of implantation has begun. It prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation or fertilization. It is not the same as RU 486 as it does not cause abortion. To learn more about what EC is and how it works to prevent unintended pregnancies, please explore our website.
